When should I call?
The Crisis Center for South Suburbia is open 24 Hours a day to accept crisis calls. It is recommended that a call to our hotline be made from a safe secure location away from the abuser. Police stations, hospitals libraries and friends home are just a few options.
What should I bring?
CCSS provides toiletries, linens , food and clothing. Due to limited space in the shelter you may bring 1 bag of clothing and personal items.
Will I have to pay anything or have insurance?
Most services at the Crisis Center are free.
Am I allowed to work or still go to school?
Absolutely, we want to support clients in all of their accomplishments.
Where will my children go to school?
Children can attend school in our school district or attend school in their previous district depending on safety, commute and / or your needs. A case manager and local homeless liaison will provide support and guidance though the decision process.
What if I don’t own a car?
We are located near public transportation.
Will I have someone to talk with?
Clients will be provided a case manager and therapist. There are also daily group provided to all residents and children.
What services will I receive?
The services offered at the Crisis Center are case management, counseling, DV Education, Transitional Housing, Educational Assistance, Court Advocacy, Rental Assistance and Referral.
Can my children get help?
Yes, children can receive the same services as their mothers
How long can I stay?
The shelter is a 60 day shelter with extensions available pending circumstances.
Can I see my friends and family?
Yes we encourage visits with family and friends, as long as safety is not compromised.
What is communal living?
Communal Living is where housing is shared in common by everyone in a group. The shelter has 5 bedrooms that can host up to 40 people (beds and cribs).
Will I be safe?
We have safety procedures in place and do our utmost to keep clients, staff and employees safe.
What happens if my abuser finds me?
We will work with you to find a safe location for relocation.
Can I leave?
You may leave at any time during your stay. We do have a curfew, however, approval from your case manager to extend your curfew can be allowed on occasions.
What will I learn?
Domestic Violence Education, self-esteem and many other topics are provided on a weekly basis.
Do I have to have an order of protection?
No, you may discuss this with your case manager or a Court Advocate if needed.
Will I be sharing a room?
Yes the shelter is communal living.
Are there rules?
We are a Voluntary Services organization, however we do have rules that encourage a safe nurturing environment.
Do I need to bring food?
All food is provided by the Crisis Center.
